凯瑟琳（艾玛·汤普森 Emma Thompson 饰）曾经是脱口秀行业中的先锋女战士 ，她所创办的节目吸引了无数人的注意和评论。可如今，一再下滑的收视率和她不断下跌的个人评价让凯瑟琳开始意识到，如果再不对情势加以干涉 ，那么她很有可能会丢掉饭碗。 为了打破外界对自己“厌女”的指控，凯瑟琳决定雇佣一位名叫茉莉（敏迪·卡灵 Mindy Kaling 饰）的印度裔女作家为自己工作，本来只是打算拿她装点门面的凯瑟琳渐渐发现，这个单纯的有些可笑的女孩肚子里确实有点东西。在茉莉的帮助之下，凯瑟琳的风评开始扭转，而凯瑟琳也帮助茉莉抵达了她独自一人绝对无法到达的职业高峰。
